THE BACK TO EARTH INITIATIVE
"It's enormously beneficial for us to have this basis of material that we can work, and that goes all the way back to a balanced plant and all the way back to a balanced soil." Bindi Wines, Macedon
Recycling Victoria (now part of the EPA) gave us the challenge of making compost interesting. They needed to educate Melbourne residents about how their household organic waste is being converted into compost and used by primary industries to improve soils. Showing the value of the recycled material and making clear the harm caused by plastics and other contamination in the green bin were central to the messaging. We consulted closely with the client and other stakeholders such as the waste processors to come up with a plan. For the first stage we visited Bindi Wines in Macedon, McNab Orchards in Ardmona and Bandicoot Organics in Serpentine. The result was a series of short case studies and an overview film that also included scenes and input from a major processing facility in Bulla. For the second stage there was a focus on households with high impact visuals and text graphics to target social media platforms, with some novel POV camera angles and use of macro wide angle and probe lenses.
